The writer Akif Pirinçci was sentenced to prison for using derogatory names against immigrants. He has now been sentenced to nine months in prison for incitement to hatred.

Akif Pirinçci was sentenced to nine months in prison on Monday. The writer, who is known, among other things, for his cat crime novels, must now go to prison for sedition because he agitated against migrants, said the judge in justifying the verdict. Pirinçci sees his statements as covered by freedom of expression.

The background is a contribution on his private blog “The Little Akif” from 2022. In it, Pirinçci was upset about, among other things, “Muslims or Afros” who would “continue to multiply like microbes”. He also described them as “parasites” in “state welfare institutions”.

The judge further explained that this text incites hatred of migrants. In addition, it represents an attack on human dignity. With nine months in prison, the judge’s verdict even exceeded the sentence demanded by the public prosecutor’s office. They had asked for seven months.

Pirinçci’s lawyer now wants to file an appeal. Not every criticism of refugees or borderline statement is sedition; not everything that doesn’t please everyone automatically constitutes a criminal offense, he argued in court. He believes he has a greater chance of a more lenient verdict at the Federal Court of Justice.

It is not the first time that Pirinçci has been convicted of sedition. The writer was sentenced to a fine back in 2017, because in an public address he spoke, among other things, of “Muslim garbage dumps”.
